BLOOM
Bloom is a fine art series inspired by Robert Mapplethorpe and Georgia O’Keeffe. In contrast to their works, this series looks past sensuality that is often associated with flowers and capture the deeper attributes of both femininity and masculinity that flowers embody. The conscious choice of black and white photography serves to transport the audience back to a time when women had no voice and no rights. The tough journey women have had to embark on, always striving to be equal to their counterparts, plays a big role in the creation of these images.
Bloom aspires to encourage new thinking and broader conversations when considering the meaning of feminism. Women were often told, in order to succeed in the real world they have to toughen up, become more masculine. Men on the other hand, were told that being sensitive is a feminine act, a sign of weakness. This series asks that we destroy our current judgement on gender and sexuality, and start again from ground zero, by allowing ourselves to contemplate flowers without bias.
