Women in Art

Las Laguna Art Gallery is pleased to present our Women in Art exhibition. We aim to celebrate the works of women artists, who sadly, have been marginalized for centuries within their field. Gender bias is less apparent today yet there are still disparities and obstacles that women must overcome, along with a persistent underrepresentation in exhibitions worldwide.

Each year Las Laguna Art Gallery provides an entire month dedicated to women artists. Selected from hundreds of submission, this exhibition features established and up and coming local, national and international artists.

9th ANNUAL JURIED PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW

Photography is filled with endless possibilities, ambivalent concepts and diverse splashes of light and darkness.  It captures moments in time that would otherwise be lost.  It’s a preservation process in its purest form. Particularly in the world we find ourselves in today, photography provides an opportunity to view people, places, and things that we would otherwise not be able to enjoy.

This open themed show gives the photographer and the photographic artist an opportunity to take us on a journey. Are you pushing boundaries and elevating the medium? Is your work thought-provoking?  Lead us with your lens to places we need to go, to the things we need to see and the concepts we need to explore. Don’t miss this chance to display and sell your work!  We need a distraction! We need YOU!

BLOOM

Bloom is a fine art series inspired by Robert Mapplethorpe and Georgia O’Keeffe. In contrast to their works, this series looks past sensuality that is often associated with flowers and capture the deeper attributes of both femininity and masculinity that flowers embody. The conscious choice of black and white photography serves to transport the audience back to a time when women had no voice and no rights. The tough journey women have had to embark on, always striving to be equal to their counterparts, plays a big role in the creation of these images.

Bloom aspires to encourage new thinking and broader conversations when considering the meaning of feminism. Women were often told, in order to succeed in the real world they have to toughen up, become more masculine. Men on the other hand, were told that being sensitive is a feminine act, a sign of weakness. This series asks that we destroy our current judgement on gender and sexuality, and start again from ground zero, by allowing ourselves to contemplate flowers without bias.

Art In Mind

Cacophony mental health awareness photographic series have been picked up yet again by The BrickLane Gallery The Annexe, London for their Art In Mind exhibition that will take place on 27th June until 10th July.

Embracing the wonders of abstract expressionism, I've created a series of photographs that has the potential to be the voice for individuals who are struggling with mental health. One of which has been curated by A. Smith Gallery for their Summertime exhibition. This piece titled Frazzled give an insight to the challenges of mental health, predominantly focusing on the elements of anxiety, depression, isolation and fragmentation.

Inspired by the Heads Together Campaign, spearheaded by HRH The Duke of Cambridge, The Dutchess of Cambridge and HRH Prince Harry of Wales, this series aspires to dispose shame and self-doubt and start conversations for individuals. Sharing these stories will provide visibility to communities that are coping with mental wellbeing which helps remove any associated stigma. This in turn builds bridges of support through a better understanding of what mental health is about, as well as how it affects us all.
